From its glorious past as the Capital of Christendom, Avignon has preserved an exceptional heritage, much of which is listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. By choosing to settle in this strategic location, at the crossroads of 14th-century political interests, Popes Clement V, John XXII, and especially Benedict XII and Clement VI (there were nine in total between 1305 and 1429), helped shape the history and legend of what is now commonly known as… the City of the Popes.
What to do in Avignon ?
Here are some places not to miss in Avignon:
The Palais des Papes : an iconic monument of Avignon and one of the largest Gothic palaces in Europe, built in the 14th century. Discover its vast halls and remarkable frescoes.
The Saint-Bénézet Bridge : better known as the Pont d’Avignon. Steeped in history and famous worldwide thanks to the traditional song “Sur le Pont d’Avignon”, it offers beautiful views over the river and the city walls.
Avignon’s Historic Centre : listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its cobbled streets, lively squares, and numerous monuments make it an ideal place for a stroll. You will find the true Provençal atmosphere here, blending culture, gastronomy, and history.
The Saint-Martial Chapel : a discreet yet remarkable place, especially known for its medieval frescoes. It offers a peaceful and intimate atmosphere, away from the tourist crowds. It is well worth a visit for lovers of art and heritage.
Rue des Teinturiers : one of the most charming streets in the city, lined with a canal and old water wheels. Very lively, it is home to many cafés, restaurants, and small theatres. It is perfect for a pleasant walk or a relaxing break.
The Rocher des Doms : a public garden located on a hilltop, offering exceptional panoramic views over the Rhône River and the surrounding area. It is an ideal place to relax, take a walk, or simply enjoy the scenery. The sunset is especially appreciated here. Right next to it, you will find the Notre-Dame des Doms Cathedral.
Barthelasse Island : located opposite the city, it offers a peaceful natural setting. It is perfect for outdoor activities such as cycling or walking, and also provides a unique view of the Palais des Papes.
The Petit Palais Museum : an art museum housed in a former palace near the historic centre. It features a rich collection of Italian and medieval paintings. It is an ideal cultural visit to complement the discovery of Avignon’s heritage.
